McLuen, Wilbur "Red," age 93, died unexpectedly on August 25, 2011. He was born on June 1, 1918, in Stuart, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Elsie, brother, Kenneth, and wife, Peggy. His older sister, Darlene Downing, continues to reside in Iowa. Upon graduating high school, he headed to California with several friends to work in the aircraft industry where he remained until he was drafted into World War II in August 1942. He served three years in the U.S. Navy in the pacific theater. Following his discharge, he attended trade school in Kansas City, Missouri, on the GI Bill. After graduation, he landed a job with the Boeing Co., in Wichita, where he was employed for over 20 years. He then changed careers and was employed by the City of Wichita in Central Inspection until he retired in 1981. While in Wichita, he met his wife, of 56 years, on a blind date. Together they had two children: Stanley (Jan) of Wichita, and Diane (Wayne Ingham) of Fairfax, Vermont. After his wife's death in 2010, he relocated to a vibrant retirement community where he could be found most afternoons playing pool with his buddies. To celebrate his life, a memorial will be held on September 1, from 4 - 7 pm, at The Regent, 2010 N. Webb Road. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to Central Prairie Honor Flight, 1619 Kansas, Great Bend, KS 67530.
