Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 73.--12th May, 1746. John Mitchell, farmer, to Wm. Mitchell, farmer, £40 current money Virginia; 400 acres in Augusta; Benj. Borden's line, part of land patented to John, 15th March, 1744. Acknowledged, 12th May, 1746, by John Mitchell and Mary, his wife. (Note: John Mitchell and Mary were William Mitchell's parents).

• William Mitchell received a patent of 200 acres on a "Branch of James River called the Mary", on 25 September, 1746, as listed in the disposition below:

• Page 132.—15th February, 1748-9. William Mitchell and Margaret (his wife) to James McClure. Branch of James River called the Mary, 200 acres patented to William, 25th September, 1746.

• Vol. 1 - ORIGINAL PETITIONS AND PAPERS FILED IN THE COUNTY COURT. 1750 - I, John Mitchell, son of John Mitchell, and brother of William Mitchell of the County of Augusta, held and firmly bound to Thomas Wilson, late of Pennsylvania. 14th September, 1762. John, Jr., obtained patent with his father's money and for his father's benefit for 400 acres on a branch of James River, known by the name of Broad Spring Branch, which pond was afterwards sold by John, Sr., to his son, William, and William and wife, Margaret, have sold the same to said Thomas Wilson, indemnity against any claims of John, Jr., or any one under him (not recorded).

• Vol. 1 - ORIGINAL PETITIONS AND PAPERS FILED IN THE COUNTY COURT. 1753-1754, Pt. 2. - Examination of Margaret Mitchell, wife of William Mitchell, and daughter of Ephraim McDowell, 1753. She had a son. (Note: this proves the identity of William Mitchell's wife).

John Cawley and Margaret, of Staunton, to Sampson and George Mathews, £40, 1/2 lot of woodland on northwest of Staunton, 14 acres, part in No. 9 and part in No. 10, surveyed for Robert McClenachan lying between lots of James Hughes and John Kerr, see deed McClenachan to Margaret and Joseph Gamwell, 22d May; 1760; also 1/2 of a half-acre lot in Staunton; half of lot No. 5 also conveyed by McClenachan in above deed; both which pieces since sold by Gamwell to Archer Mathews, the remainder being conveyed by Joseph Gamwell to said John Cawley, now husband of the late said Margaret Gamwell, August, 1768. Teste: Pat. Lockhart, William Mitchell, Euphemia Hughes, John Walsh.

• Vol. 1 - APRIL 11, 1772. - (362) Oyer and Terminer on 2 slaves for murdering Thomas Marmeon--guilty--to be hanged on 18th of present month between 12 and 8--heads to be severed--one to be affixed on a pole below the town near the road at the rocks and the other near the road leading from Wm. Mitchell's to Staunton. (Note: well there's a conversation starter...)

• Vol. 1 - AUGUST 19, 1782. - (81) Certified to the Auditors that John Mitchell, deceased, was killed at Ninety Six, and William Mitchell is his heir-at-law. (Note: William Mitchell wss the eldest son of John Mitchell).

• Vol. 2 - Insolvents and Delinquents, 1795: William Mitchell, dead.
