[edit] About Chico SantillanYnocencio "Chico" Santillan was born 24 March 1929 in California, the son of Jesus Santillan (b. abt. 1902) and his wife Cruz Lechuga (1901-1967), both immigrants who came to America from Mexico prior to 1925. Chico was one of the original owners of Crescent Foods, along with Al Rowen and his brother Fritz "Fred" Rowen and Ernest Rose. Chico was the 3rd employee of the company, starting as Crescent Foods warehouse foreman, who was responsible for the purchasing and also ran the warehouse crew. When primary owner Al Rowen sold the company to Federal in 1971, Chico was made head of the company's Sales Department and was responsible for its overall sales efforts for several years. Chico and his fellow Crescent Foods owners were all charter members of a local food industry trade association, [then called] the Deli Council of Southern California, which later was re-named to the "Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California" (or "DDBC"). Chico was recognized for his early contributions to the Council by being awarded the "Big Cheese" in July 1982, while working at Crescent-Reese Foods, and for his continued and long-standing support of the Council, Chico Santillan was awarded the DDBC's third "Supplier of the Year" award" in 1977.Chico passed away on 11 August 1992 in Los Angeles County, California at age 63. His contributions and support of the industry are appreciated and will not be forgotten. Image Gallery
