The Adur District was created on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the urban districts of Southwick and Shoreham by Sea and the civil parishes of Coombes, Lancing and Sompting located to the west of Shoreham in the Worthing Rural District. It was named Adur after the river which flows down to the English Channel between Lancing and Shoreham by Sea.

Adur has an area of 16.14 sq mi (41.80 km2) and a population of 63,869 according to a local estimate made in mid-2018.
