Brackley is a town in Northamptonshire, England, 19 miles (31 km) from Oxford and 22 miles (35 km) from Northampton. Brackley was historically a market town based on the wool trade and on lacemaking. It was built on the intersecting trade routes between London, Birmingham and the Midlands (north and south) and between Cambridge and Oxford (east and west). Brackley is close to the Silverstone Circuit where F1 Team motor-racing takes place in the United Kingdom. [edit] HistoryBrackley Castle was built soon after 1086. It comprised a motte mound 10 feet (3.0 m) high and approximately 44 yards (40 m) in diameter with an outer bailey to the east. Brackley Castle may have gone out of use in 1147. It was destroyed between 1173 (when the then lord of the manor, the Earl of Leicester, Robert le Blancmain, fell out with Henry II) and again in 1217 (when the Earl of Winchester, Blancmain's heir, was on the losing side against Henry III during the First Barons' War. The site was later granted to the Hospital of Saints James and John founded by Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester. For more information, see the EN Wikipedia article Brackley. [edit] Research Tips[edit] A Vision of Britain through TimeA Vision of Britain through Time describes parishes and former parishes from a gazetteer of 1871; provides an outline of the historic administration links for parishes. The OS map of 1900, the OS map of 1935, and the OS map of 1965 all show parish boundaries and settlements within parishes. These maps are all expandable to show individual parishes and are useful for inspecting changes occuring over the 20th century. [edit] Archive Centres
