Brigstock is a village and civil parish in the English county of Northamptonshire. The parish is now in the unitary authority of North Northamptonshire. From 1974 until April 2021 it was part of the East Northamptonshire District. From the 2001 UK census to the 2011 UK census, the parish population increased from 1,329 to 1,357. [edit] HistoryThe village is surrounded by the remnants of the royal forest of Rockingham. During the Middle Ages, Brigstock was an administrative hub for the forest, and was granted a market charter in 1426. Brigstock is an ancient settlement, dating back to the Bronze Age or Saxon period. Several properties in the village appear in the Domesday Book of 1086, in which Brigstock is referred to as "Brigstoc". Roman relics have been found in and around the village. The village cross, in the heart of the old village, was erected as a monument after Elizabeth I passed through the village. The parish church of St. Andrew shows remnants of a tower which is probably 10th-century. The Grade II* listed Manor House was built as a hunting lodge in a clearing of the Rockingham Forest; in 1890 the house was remodelled by the Victorian architect John Alfred Gotch. Much of the village has been owned by the Solesbury family since the mid-1800s and is said to be the location of the famous family vault. Today the Solesbury family still maintain a presence in the village but since the early 2000s they have shifted their business interests into grocery retail throughout East Northamptonshire. [Wikipedia offers no references for the Solesbury family.] For more information, see the EN Wikipedia article Brigstock. [edit] Research Tips[edit] A Vision of Britain through TimeA Vision of Britain through Time describes parishes and former parishes from a gazetteer of 1871; provides an outline of the historic administration links for parishes. The OS map of 1900, the OS map of 1935, and the OS map of 1965 all show parish boundaries and settlements within parishes. These maps are all expandable to show individual parishes and are useful for inspecting changes occuring over the 20th century. [edit] Archive Centres
