This Ordnance Survey map of 1900 from A Vision of Britain through Time locates all the original rural districts established in Wiltshire in 1894. In 1934 there were a number of mergers of neighbouring districts.

Calne Rural District was in the central part of Wiltshire, north of Devizes Rural District, east of Chippenham Rural District, south of Cricklade and Wootton Bassett Rural District and west of Marlborough Rural District. Calne Rural District existed from 1894 until 1934 when it became part of the Calne and Chippenham Rural District.
