Chilcompton (#6 on map) is a civil parish with a village of the same name in Somerset, England. It is situated in the Mendip Hills on the B3139 road between Radstock and Wells, close to the A37 road (between Shepton Mallet and Bristol). Its population in the UK census of 2011 was 1,918.

The parish's history is mainly that of farming and coal mining. The Church of St John The Baptist dates from the 15th century and was largely rebuilt in the 19th. The perpendicular embattled tower dates from around 1460 and contains six bells.

Governance

Chilcompton waa part of the Chewton Hundred, one of the hundreds or early subdivisions of the county of Somerset. From 1894 until 1974 it was part of the Clutton Rural District.

In 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, all urban and rural districts across England were abolished and counties were reorganized into metropolitan and non-metropolitan districts. Chilcompton became part of the non-metropolitan Mendip District.
