Culmstock Rural District was formed in Devon in 1894 and was located on the border with the county of Somerset. In 1935 it was absorbed into the larger Tiverton Rural District, and in 1974 into the Mid Devon District. It contained only five parishes. Their relative locations will be found on the map of Tiverton Rural. The concept of the rural district was a successor to the sanitary district organization and was based on the Registration SubDistrict of the same name which had existed from 1837. The main registration district was Wellington which was in Somerset. In 1935 a new regulation determined that registration districts and rural districts could no longer cover two sides of a county border. Consequently, Culmstock Rural District and sub-registration district gave up their association with Wellington and were transferred to Tiverton Rural District in Devon. Culmstock Rural District was abolished in the transfer. [edit] Parishes
