East Dean and United Parishes Rural District, was renamed East Dean Rural District in 1935. At the same time there were a number of boundary reforms among the parishes. A further series of boundary reforms took place in 1953.
East Dean Rural District was abolished in 1974 and the area became part of the Forest of Dean District, under the Local Government Act 1972.

The civil parish of East Dean underwent a number of changes. Part was split off in 1935 to form the new parish of Lydbrook which was transferred to West Dean Rural District. In 1953 it was abolished as a civil parish in 1953 to create Cinderford, Drybrook and Ruspidge. At the same time further parts were transferred to Awre, Littledean and Mitcheldean parishes.
