Midhurst Rural District was formed in 1894 following the passing of the Local Government Act of that year. It was located in the northwest corner of the county. In 1974 the whole of the Rural District existing at that time became part of the Chichester District in West Sussex. In 1933 an unpopulated part of Burton parish in Petworth Rural District was transferred into Midhurst. At the same time the parishes of Didling was absorbed into Treyford and Selham was absorbed into Graffham. In 1953 Terwick was absorbed into Rogate.
