A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following statistics of Shirwell Hundred from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "SHERWILL, a village, a parish, and a hundred, in Devon. The village stands 4¼ miles NE by N of Barnstaple [railway] station, and has a post-office under Barnstaple. The hundred contains eleven parishes. Acres: 47,648. Population: 4,392. Houses: 901."
