Shutlanger is a small village and civil parish now in West Northamptonshire. From 1974 until April 2021 it was part of the South Northamptonshire District of Northamptonshire, England. The village is 5 miles (8 km) east of Towcester and 7 miles (11 km) south of Northampton. In 1881 the parish of Shutlanger had a total population of 403. In 1901 it was 339 and by 1971 it had dropped to 233. At the time of the 2001 UK census, it was 270 people, increasing to 290 at the 2011 UK census. There was a great medieval house here called the "Monastery", but it was just a house and had no monastic connections. The village is close to Stoke Park Pavilions which is all that remain of the stately house and grounds of Stoke Park. The Stoke Park estate had the first Palladian- style English country house. The building is a Grade I listed building. Charles I granted the park and Manor House to Sir Francis Crane (c. 1579 – c. 1636), director and founder of the Mortlake Tapestry Works which were established on the estate of John Dee, the mathematician, at Mortlake in Surrey, in 1619. Crane was made Secretary to Charles I when he was Prince of Wales and was knighted in 1617. With grants of land, money and high prices charged for tapestries, Crane became very wealthy. He was granted around 400 acres of the parish of Stoke Bruerne in 1629. Crane brought the design of the house from Italy and had assistance from Inigo Jones to build it. Shutlanger has its own Parish Council and belongs to the church grouping with Stoke Bruerne and Grafton Regis. [edit] Research Tips[edit] A Vision of Britain through TimeA Vision of Britain through Time describes parishes and former parishes from a gazetteer of 1871; provides an outline of the historic administration links for parishes. The OS map of 1900, the OS map of 1935, and the OS map of 1965 all show parish boundaries and settlements within parishes. These maps are all expandable to show individual parishes and are useful for inspecting changes occuring over the 20th century. [edit] Archive Centres
