A Vision of Britain through Time provides this description of South Holme from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"HOLME (SOUTH), a township in Hovingham parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; 7 miles NW by W of New Malton. Acres: 777. Real property: £1,117. Population: 68. [further information cut off]

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, South Holme was located in Malton Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Hovingham in the Rydale Wapentake.
