St. Mary Hill is a settlement in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It is located approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) outside the market town of Cowbridge. Within the Vale of Glamorgan it is part of the community (or civil parish) of Llangan along with Treoes and the village of Llangan itself. St. Mary Hill was a separate parish before 1974.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of St. Mary Hill from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"MARY-HILL (ST.), a parish in Bridgend [registration] district, Glamorgan; on the river Ogmore, near the South Wales railway, 3¼ miles E of Bridgend. It contains the hamlet of Rythin; and its post town is Cowbridge. Acres: 1,404. Real property: £933. Population: 252. Houses: 48. The property is all in one estate. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Llandaff. Value, £90. Patron, Sir T. D. Aubrey, Bart. The church is good; and there are charities £4. A cattle fair is held on 26 Aug."

Research Tips

  • GENUKI on Glamorgan Lots of leads to other sources and descriptions of former parishes.
  • The FamilySearch Wiki on Glamorgan has recently been updated (early 2016) and looks remarkably like Wikipedia. Their map "Glamorgan Parish Map.jpg" enlarges to show all the original parishes. The sub-section "Parishes of Historic Glamorgan" lists all the parishes of Glamorgan and the newer preserved counties and principal areas in both English and Welsh. (Currently this website is still under construction.)
