St. Stephen's by Launceston is now a modern civil parish in the east of Cornwall, England. The population of the parish in the 2001 census was 312. The parish lies immediately north west of the town of Launceston and is bounded to the south by the parishes of St. Thomas-by-Launceston Rural (also known as St. Thomas the Apostle Rural) and Lawhitton. To the east it is bounded by the River Tamar, (the border between Cornwall and Devon), and to the north and north-west by the parishes of Werrington, North Petherwin and Egloskerry. St. Stephen's by Launceston was part of the Launceston Rural District from 1894 until 1974. [edit] Research TipsOne of the many maps available on A Vision of Britain through Time is one from the Ordnance Survey Series of 1900 illustrating the parish boundaries of Cornwall at the turn of the 20th century. This map blows up to show all the parishes and many of the small villages and hamlets. The following websites have pages explaining their provisions in WeRelate's Repository Section. Some provide free online databases.
