Wick (Welsh: Y Wig) is a small village and civil parish which, since 1996, has been located in the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales. It is situated about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the coast. The closest towns are Llantwit Major, Cowbridge and Bridgend.

In 1996, when the principal areas were introduced, Wick was transferred from Mid Glamorgan to the Vale of Glamorgan despite the Vale of Glamorgan being considered to have been part of South Glamorgan.

For a definition of "principal area", see the Wikipedia article.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Wick from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"WICK, a parish in Bridgend [registration] district, Glamorgan; on the coast, 5½ miles SW of Cowbridge [railway] station. Post town: Bridgend. Acres: 1,370; of which 50 are water. Real property, £1,309. Population: 423. Houses: 88. The property is much subdivided. The living is a [perpetual] curacy, annexed to St. Brides-Major. The church is decayed."

Research Tips

  • GENUKI on Glamorgan Lots of leads to other sources and descriptions of former parishes.
  • The FamilySearch Wiki on Glamorgan has recently been updated (early 2016) and looks remarkably like Wikipedia. Their map "Glamorgan Parish Map.jpg" enlarges to show all the original parishes. The sub-section "Parishes of Historic Glamorgan" lists all the parishes of Glamorgan and the newer preserved counties and principal areas in both English and Welsh. (Currently this website is still under construction.)
