The following map, one of a planned series, provides a frame of reference for discussing pioneer families of Southwest Virginia. Settlement of this area was not permitted prior to 1769, but Long Hunters, traders, and early explorers passed thorugh the area prior to that date. This map emphasizes key topographic features that appear in historic records of the settlement era. Some place names are included to assist the reader with locating topographic features in relationship to the modern day setting.
