The DENFIP surname seems to be unique to the descendants of John Alfred Denfip. John was born in Strasboroug, France and emigrated to Alexander County, Illinois. John served in the Company B of the 18th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the later part of the Civil War.

Family tradition is that John changed his name to Denfip when he arrived in the US. Tradition was that the original surname was BEAUCHAT.
