Friesland to U.S. [25 December 2010]

It appears the list under Family names of people that migrated from Friesland to the United States includes those who came from all of the Netherlands (from the first worksheet in that Excel file). Example: Person:Peter Ameele (3). --Jennifer (JBS66) 05:45, 25 December 2010 (EST)

New addition to the list [4 January 2011]

Pheifer also went from Friesland to the U.S. The only difficulty I see in the column format, is that it seems troublesome to add a new name to the list. --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:45, 31 December 2010 (EST)

I am not yet happy with this page. The colums are not ideal, but also just only familynames are not very helpful. The listing should show up the families and persons which are involved, but when it has the same indexing as the surname-categories (first name of husband), that makes also not really much sense. So I am unsure what and how. The list of surnames doesn't bring much new information. A bit of brainstorming has to be done.--Klaas (Ekjansen) 08:27, 4 January 2011 (EST)

What do you want to achieve with this list. I saw this list for the first time last week and I thought: okay, nice, are there any familiair names? I think researchers, especially in the U.S. know that they migrated from any country, and often they know which country this is. on Ellisisland.org and Castlegarden.org you can find names, problem is mostly the spelling. Werelate wants to be different from other databases and websites so there must be a way to use these names in a different context, maybe refere to other related websites, with the same names?--henk 08:44, 4 January 2011 (EST)

Nou doe ik het even in het Nederlands. Theoretisch weten de nakomelingen van emigranten waar zij vandaan komen, maar al te vaak krijg ik vragen over families, die naar men aanneemt uit NL komen, maar toch uit Duitsland en omgekeerd (tussen Zwitserland en Duitsland is de verwisseling nog veel vaker). Zo zeker weet men het toch niet. De andere kant is de Europeese. Ik heb verschillende keren families vermist, die nergens op emigratielijsten (Tresoar, Overijssel, Groningen) staan, maar door toeval in de USA opduiken. Niet via EllisIsland en ook niet via Castlegarden te vinden. Dus een overzicht van de families/personen die in Nederland geboren zijn en ooit geëmigreerd naar een ander land (nu beperk ik mij tot de USA) kan zeer wel nuttige diensten leveren. Daarnaast is het een mogelijkheid contacten tussen de beide werelden te leggen, vooral wanneer dit als een soort bijproduct zonder veel extra inspanning mogelijk is.--Klaas (Ekjansen) 09:03, 4 January 2011 (EST)

Klopt ben ik helemaal met je eens, dat is mij ook al vaker overkomen, Ik heb o.m. de familie Knot toegevoegd uit Stitswerd in groningen, deze naam is verbasterd tot Knott, het probleem is echter dat de naam ook voorkoment in Engeland, Ierland, etc. Hetzelfde geldt natuurlijk voor Swart, Zwart, etc. en ik heb inderdaad ook gezien dat friese families naar canada emigreren en toch in de US zijn neergestreken. Nou zijn er dus wel lijsten (tresoar heeft een (onvolledige) database, Allegroningers ook met landverhuizers, zou dat dan misschien een toegevoegde waarde kunnen hebben? Maar dan blijft ook bij mij de vraag hoe krijg je (en met name amerikanen) dat ze "creatiever zoeken" --henk 09:19, 4 January 2011 (EST)

Met creatief zoeken, daar heb jij gelijk. Dat kunnen wij ook al in Nederland zelf gebruiken omdat de ambtenaren van de burgerlijke stand de eerste decennia wel heel gemakkelijk met de schrijfwijze van de familienamen omgingen (maar toch met minder fantasie als in de USA). Over de werkelijke meerwaarde kan ik mij nog geen oordeel vormen, maar zoals gezegd/geschreven, wanneer het mogelijk is deze gegevens die zowiezo in WeRelate staan voor een speciale zoekloop te kunnen hergroeperen, dan is deze speciale site nuttig, en anders so what.--Klaas (Ekjansen) 09:30, 4 January 2011 (EST)

Ach ja, als ik naar mijn eigen achternaam kijk, die wordt nog altijd regelmatig verkeerd gespeld (meestal op zijn duits). Deze lijst zou dus een meerwaarde kunnen krijgen als je dus zou kunnen doorlinken naar de verschillende schijfwijzen en mogelijke herkomstgebieden, In het geval van Swart->mogelijke schijfwijzen (Zwart, Schwart, Swart, etc.|) -> mogelijke herkomstlanden.--henk 09:46, 4 January 2011 (EST)

I came across this page today, which may contain useful formatting ideas. One additional item to consider: this page is titled Dutch Emigration. Since it sounds as though you want to examine not just the Dutch leaving the Netherlands, but also where they went to, you may want to title this page Dutch Migration, to cover both Emigration and Immigration. --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:20, 4 January 2011 (EST)

Possible use of categories [5 January 2011]

I edited 2 pages as an example of how categories may be a useful tool for this project. I created a category called Category:Dutch Migration. Within that is another category called Category:Dutch immigrants to the United States. On my husband's grandparents' pages I added that category, so they appear in the list. If you like this idea, we may want to tweak it a bit to separate the early 1600 immigrants from the second wave in the 1800's. --Jennifer (JBS66) 09:11, 5 January 2011 (EST)
