Anthony Martin Branch
21st Texas Cavalry Regiment Co. A

Anthony Martin Branch born in Buckingham Co Va July 16th 1823 was son of Samuel Branch 3rd and Winifred Jones Guerrant. His father an eminent lawyer was Ensign in 4th (Greenhills) Virginia Reg. of Militia in Capt John P. Richardson company in War 1812 and was son of Samuel Branch 2nd (an officer in American Revolutionary War) and his wife Jane Martin, daughter of [*missing text* Anthony Martin and Sarah Holman, daughter of] Jane and James Holman of Goochland Co Va a Capt of Va Militia 1740-45 son of James and Lorah Holman.

Said Anthony Martin was a private in Col James Livingston Continental Reg in Revolutionary war he was son of Peter Martin and his wife Mary Ann Rapine (daughter of Capt Anthony and Margaret Rapine).

Said Peter Martin was son of John and Margaret Martin of Goochland Co Va.

Said Samuel Branch 2nd was son of Samuel Branch 1st of Chesterfield Co Va a descendant of Christopher Branch who was a member of House of Burgesses for Henrico Co Va in 1639.

The Maternal grandfather of said A.M Branch was John Guerrant Jr. a Liutenant [sic] in Va Continental Line in Revolutionary war was in Charles Scotts Brigade 1776 from Goochland Co Va was at battle of "Monmouth" and "White Planes" served until end of the war he was a member of Va Continental Convention 1788. Brigadier General of Va Militia 1804, was the Liutenant-Governor of Va 1805, married Mary Heath Povall, daughter of Robert Povell 3rd, and Winifred Jones Miller, daughter of Wm Miller and Mary Heath, daughter of Thomas Heath of Northumberland Co Va and his wife Winifred Jones, daughter of Robert Jones Jr and his wife Sarah Garlington, daughter of Christopher Garlington Jr, all of Northumberland Co Va.

Said Wm Miller was son of Thomas and Winifred Miller. Said Thomas Heath was son of Mary Heath who was executrix of Capt Wm Lee she was perhaps a daughter of Capt Wm. Lee-a member of house of Burgesses Nothumberland Co Va 1693.

Said John Guerrant Jr was son of John Guerrant Sr a Lieutenant of Militia of Goochland Co Va 1771, and who was also with Gen Geo Washington at "Valley Forge" in Revolutionary war married Elizabeth Porter, daughter of John Porter Sr son of Thomas Porter and his wife Elizabeth Dutoit daughter of Peter and Barbara Dutoit, Huguenots.

Said John Guerrant Sr was son of Major Peter Guerrant and his wife Magdalen Trabue, daughter of Sir Anthony Trabue and his wife Magdalene Flournoy, Huguenots. Said Major Peter Guerrant was son of Daniel Guerrant Jr and Francoise Lorange, also rendered L'Orange, said Daniel Guerrant Jr was son of Daniel Guerant Sr also rendered Guerrant and Guerin, a Huguenot who came with his wife and 4 children to Va 1700 he was of the French Nobility from St. Nazaire and [Saintiny?] also from Isle of Champaign France.

Said Anthony Martin Branch the subject of this record was graduated at Hampden Sidney College Va in 1842 went to Huntsville Texas 1847, entered the practice of law as partner 29 of "Yoakuin" the historian and General Sam Houston made him executor of his will in 1863. Served in Texas Legislature 1859 in State Senate 1861-62, resigned from State Senate to enlist in Confederate Army 1862 (Lee record on front page) was Captain of Co "A" of 21st Texas Cavalry regiment, was member of Confederate Congress from 1863 until end of Civil war, after the war was elected to United States Congress 1866 was not allowed to take his seat because he had fought in Confederate army.

Said A.M. Branch was one of ten children his brother Robert Guerrant Branch was Professor of Ancient Languages at Hampden Sidney College Va about 1842, his sister (the youngest child) was Martha Winnifred Branch, wife of Judge Edward Albert Palmer and went also to Houston Texas to live 1847 & had three children viz: (he became guardian of them) 1 Wm Henry Palmer married Susan Manella Shepherd. 2 H. Elizabeth (Bettie) Palmer married first Edward Milby after his death married Hon Joseph C. Hutcheson. 3 Rosalie Heath Palmer married Sinclair Taliaferro

Said A.M. Branch married Amanda Smith of North Alabama 1849 he died childless in Huntsville Texas Oct 3rd 1867, was guardian of children of his sister given above
