Next step: Review your GEDCOM [14 June 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Cook Hunt short.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate lines and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Error importing Pre 1800.ged [8 August 2010]

We had an error while attempting to import your GEDCOM. This is most likely our fault. We will review the error and should have your pages ready tomorrow (or Monday if tomorrow falls on a weekend). There is no need to re-import your GEDCOM file.

For questions or problems, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org.

Please don't add data without sources [9 August 2010]

Your GEDCOM modified several pages I have worked on in the past. I spent all morning just correcting one and have several other still to review for damage. As of yet, I have yet to see a single source cited, but there were several egregious errors that would have been obvious to you if you put any effort into documenting and verifying your sources. For example, on Person:Sarah Foster (88), if you had bothered to look for the date of either of the two alleged marriages you added, you would have found that both occurred after Sarah died, a clear indication it was a different Sarah Foster that married the two alleged husbands. If you had compared the marriage and death dates of Family:John Foster and Mary Chillingsworth (1), it would have been clear it was a different John Foster that married Mary Stuard. It is fine to practice genealogy however you want at home on your personal computer, but in a collaborative environment, it is only a matter of courtesy to at least attempt to make sure the data is correct before presenting it as such in a public forum. Simply by citing your sources and attempting to use mostly primary sources, you will go a long way towards accomplishing this (note that ancestry.com, familysearch.org, and unsourced websites are not considered reliable, verifiable sources and do not count). If you don't make some effort to do this, you are not helping, and more likely, actually hindering others who are trying on this site to build a database of correct genealogy. --Jrich 13:02, 9 August 2010 (EDT)

Jabez Howland [10 August 2010]

Hello, I noticed that you added Jabez Howland, b. 1628, Plymouth, Massachusetts, d. 1712 to John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, with no sources listed. You apparently didn't notice that Jabez Howland, b. abt. 1644, d. 1708, m. Bethia Thatcher was already attached to this family. Did you mean to attach this person to this family, or was it a mistake? You are probably aware that many of the Mayflower families have been thoroughly researched and listed in the "Mayflower Families" series, so you might want to consult them before making any changes to these families, since there are several researchers that have been working on the Mayflower families, with much documentation and listing many sources.

I've removed your Jabez Howland from this family, pending any information that you may have to indicate that John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley had a "second" son named Jabez, or that he is the same one that married Bethia Thatcher.
