Cortelyou, Cortelyou Genealogy. -- There are four adults named Albert Voorhees in the third generation of this family. Researchers have often confused them. Albert son of Coert is identified in his will as Albert Coert. The others are identified by the naming of the children and their place of residence. Albert, son of Lucas, names his first child Lucas, after his father and his second son Cornelius after his father-in-law. His first son is baptized in New Brunswick, N.J. Albert, son of Albert, names his first child Lena after his mother Helena/Helletje. His second daughter is named Sarah after his mother-in-law and his first son is named Albert after his father. His children are baptized in Hackensack where the elder Albert had moved. Albert, son of Lucas names his first child Lucas their children were baptized in the Ref. Ch. of New Utrecht, Kings Co., NY.]
He took the oath of allegiance 26 Sept 1687 as Albert Coirten van Voorhuijs, a native, and was commissioned as an ensign in Kings Co. Jan 1691. [O'Callaghan Documentary History of New York, Vol. 2, pg. 354.]
In the census of Gravesend 1698 Albert Koerten is listed with one man, one woman, and four children and was an ensign in a foot company in the Gravesend militia in 1700. [O'Callaghan Documentary History of New York, Vol. 3 pg. 134 & 360.]
On 12 Feb. 1702 Barne Jooste of New Utrecht deeded to Albert Koerte of the same one half of the plantation known as Turks and since called Bruynenberg in New Utrecht, formerly belonging to John Hansen and Barne Jooste, also one half lot of land in Gravesend bought by James Hubbard in partnership with Garret Koerte, also one half of another lot. The census of 1738, New Utrecht, lists Albert Koert with two males and three females all over 10 years of age. [New York Genealogical & Biographical Record, Vol. 4, pg. 194.]
The will of Albert Coert of Flatlands, Kings Co., was dated 14 May 1747 and probated 14 April 1748. It mentions his children Coert, Elizabeth wife of Rutger van Brunt, Mary wife of John Vannoorstrandt, Margaret wife of David Nevius, Aeltje wife of Wilhelmus Stoothoof and the children of my daughter Ann who was the wife of Hendrick Cortelyou and the children of by daughter Neeltje who was the wife of Christopher Hooglandt. After the death of daughter Margaret the children she had by Petrus Stoothooff shall each have the same share as the children she shall have by David Nevius. The exectutors were his son Coert and son-in-law Rutger van Brunt, John Noordstrant, David Nevius and Wilhelmus Stoothoff, witnesses Harmanus Hoogland, Johannes Lott and Johannes Nevius.
