Ann Woolgar was baptised on 3rd November 1780 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of Ann Woolgar, formerly Roy, and her husband Thomas Woolgar.

On 21st May 1808, when Ann was 27 years old, she married a blacksmith named John Hammond. He was about 21 and from South Bersted, which is the neighbouring parish to Pagham, but they married in Chichester Cathedral, a few miles away. After their marriage they settled in the hamlet of Lagness in Pagham parish, on the road between Pagham and Chichester and near the junction with the road towards South Bersted and Bognor. Ann's parents appear to have also lived at Lagness.

Ann and John had eight children between 1808 and 1823. Seven of them were baptised at Pagham, and one at South Bersted.

In 1830 Ann's eldest daughter Sarah was married, and she became a grandmother the following year, aged 50, when Sarah's first child was born.

Ann's father died in 1836 and her mother in 1839.

The 1841 census finds Ann and John living at Lagness with their daughter Jane and son Alfred, and a young man named William Patrick who was an agricultural labourer. William Patrick would later marry their daughter Jane. The 1851 census also finds Ann and John living at Lagness, this time with their son Alfred and their widower son Henry and his two surviving children, Henry's wife having died in 1848.

Ann's son Alfred died tragically aged 36 in 1857 – he fell in a ditch after an evening with friends in Bognor and drowned.

Ann died on 17th December 1858, aged 78. She died at home at Lagness. She had had 22 grandchildren born in her lifetime and was also a great-grandmother. John outlived her by just over a year.

    Baptisms 1780 / Ann Dau[ghte]r of Tho[ma]s & Ann Wolgare Nov[embe]r 3d

This baptism has been linked to the Ann Woolgar who married John Hammond on the basis that in the 1851 census Ann Hammond gave her place of birth as Pagham whilst her ages in the census and at her burial suggest she was born around 1780. Also, the Ann baptised in 1780 had a sister with the relatively unusual name of Phoebe, which was a name Ann and John Hammond gave to one of their daughters. No evidence has been found to suggest that the Ann baptised in 1780 died young or married anyone else. One of the witnesses to Ann and John's marriage was a William Woollger, and the Ann baptised in 1780 had a brother named William.
