John Hammond was baptised on 19th October 1823 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Ann Hammond, formerly Woolgar, and her husband John Hammond, a blacksmith. The family lived at the hamlet of Lagness in Pagham. John was the youngest of the couple's eight children.
By the time of the 1841 census, John had left home and was working as a servant at a house on The Steyne in the nearby town of Bognor. He was still there ten years later, working for a banker called Henry Stracey. Some time between 1851 and 1854 he moved to the neighbouring parish of Felpham, where he was married on 23rd May 1854, aged 30, to a Belgian lady named Marie Thérèse Boutray (who was known by her middle name). They had a son named John born close to the time they married, who was apparently born in Belgium. John was followed in 1856 by a son named George, born at Felpham. John's mother died in 1858 and his father in 1860.
The 1861 census finds John working as the butler for a clergyman named George Luxford, who may well have been related to John's previous employers - his wife Ann's maiden name was Stracey. In the 1861 census John's wife Thérèse was a lady's maid to Ann Luxford. Thérèse and John's two sons were not living with them at the Luxford's house in Felpham. They were being looked after in the village by a couple called William and Ann Prior.
Some time between 1861 and 1864 the Luxfords left Felpham and moved to Salehurst, sixty miles away at the other end of Sussex. John and Thérèse went with them. In 1864 they had a daughter named Thérèse Hubertine Hammond, born at Salehurst. The 1871 census finds John and Thérèse and their daughter living at Higham House in Salehurst, the home of the Luxfords. By this time, Thérèse was working as the housekeeper.
Between 1871 and 1881, John and Thérèse left the Luxford's service and moved to Hove on the Sussex coast, where they set up a lodging house at 53 Brunswick Road. They now took on their own domestic servant, Elizabeth (Bessie) Kitchenham, who would stay with the family for many years. The 1881 and 1891 censuses both find John and Thérèse, their daughter and their servant Bessie living at 53 Brunswick Road.
John died on 17th August 1891 at 53 Brunswick Road, aged 67. Thérèse outlived him by eighteen years, and continued to run the lodging house at 53 Brunswick Road with her daughter.
