Fanny Grant was born on 20th October 1841 at Sidlesham in Sussex, and baptised there two months later. She was the youngest daughter of Mary Ann Grant, formerly Chaffer, and her husband Charles Grant, a fisherman. Fanny appears in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living at Sidlesham with her parents and siblings. In 1870, Fanny's father Charles died. The following year's census finds Fanny working as a dressmaker and living with her widowed mother at Sidlesham, along with two of her nephews.
Fanny with husband William, about 1915 On 20th January 1872, Fanny married a traction engine driver named William Edwards at Sidlesham. He was nearly seven years her junior and also from Sidlesham. Fanny and William had a son named Albert in 1872, then Fred in 1873, then twins named Edith Eliza and William in 1875, all born at Sidlesham. Fanny's mother Mary died in 1879 at Sidlesham, but by then Fanny and William had moved to the neighbouring village of Pagham. At Pagham they had a further six children: John in 1877, Annie in 1878, Theresa in 1880, Lily in 1881, Louise in 1883 and Alfred in 1884. In 1886, one of the twins, Edith, died at the age of ten.
Fanny's eldest son was married in 1895, and Fanny's first grandchild was born the following year.
Fanny's son John joined the Navy in 1896, but he was invalided out just under a year later with phthsis (tuberculosis) and died in 1897, aged 20.
Some time between 1891 and 1901 Fanny and William left Pagham and moved to the hamlet of Runcton in North Mundham parish. They were still there in 1911, and were looking after their granddaughter Ivy Briggs, being their daughter Annie's daughter. Fanny (seated) with William and several of their children, and granddaughter Ivy, possibly at Fanny's daughter Theresa's marriage in 1908.
Fanny's youngest son, Alfred, had moved to Yorkshire to be a valet at Brodsworth Hall, but he too died of tuberculosis as a young man in 1919, aged 34, leaving a wife and two young sons.
Fanny's daughter Annie died in London in 1923, aged 44, leaving four surviving children.
Fanny died at Runcton on 4th March 1925, aged 83. She had lived to see seventeen grandchildren, although one had died young, and had outlived four of her ten children. After her death William left Runcton and went to live with two of their daughters in the town of Littlehampton, a few miles to the east. He outlived Fanny by eight years and died in 1933.
