Lily Edwards was born on 23rd September 1881 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of a dressmaker named Fanny Edwards, formerly Grant, and her husband William Edwards, a traction engine driver. Lily was the eighth of the couple's ten children. She appears in the 1891 census living with her parents and siblings at Pagham.

At the time of the 1901 census Lily and her younger sister Louise appear to have been visiting their brother Fred and his wife Florence, who were boarding at a house in Midhurst. By 1911 Lily had gone into domestic service. She appears in the 1911 census working as a cook at a large town house in Chichester for a widow named Augusta Walker.

Lily never married. Her mother died in 1925 at North Mundham.

Lily’s father died at 46 Queen Street in Littlehampton in 1933. The informant for the death was an “L. Edwards”, who could be either Lily or her sister Louise, both of whom appear to have also living at 46 Queen Street at the time. They were certainly living there together a few years later at the time of the outbreak of the Second World War. They had a nine-year old girl living with them, who appears to have been from London and so was quite likely an evacuee.

Lily's sister Louise died in 1955, and Lily administered her sister's estate. Louise's last address was again given as 46 Queen Street.

Towards the end of her life, Lily left Littlehampton and went to live at Littlefair, a care home in East Grinstead. She died on 13th May 1971 at the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells, aged 89. She was buried back at Littlehampton in the same grave as her sister Louise.

Whilst Lily's date of birth has been transcribed as 28 September, the digit 8 is not entirely clear - it looks like it has been overwritten to try and correct it. It could possibly also be read as a 3 or a 5, although on balance it does seem more like an 8. However, as Lily's date of birth was given as 23rd September on both the 1939 Register and at her death, it is presumed that her date of birth was actually 23rd.
