John immigrated at the age of 21 with his parents and probably his sister Honor. The family settled in Dorchester. John was granted land there in 1634, and land with his father in 1635 and 1636. He received 5 acres out of those grants when his father died in 1638. Over his lifetime, he accumulated enough to land to leave farms and houses to his five sons.

John was a shoemaker, selectman at Dorchester, and town recorder. He married first in late 1637, four years after they arrived, and he and his wife signed the Dorchester church covenant in 1638. They had two children before his first wife died in 1645. While courting his second wife, whom he married in 1647, he wrote his "Sweete-Harte" several letters that were later published by the Dorchester Antiquarian Society. They had 8 children.

John's 1691 will makes complex bequests to his children and grandchildren, dealing with his son's marriage portions, debts to the estate, and various contingencies. It names his children John, Samuel, Bernard, James, Preserved, Joseph, Hannah, and Mary ("who was married to James Foster ... & now God haveing taken her to himselve and leaving a daughter whose name is Silence"). (Two of his daughters had died as infants.)[5]
