Advisory on John Trimble

There are two early John Trimble's that settled in Augusta County. The other John Trimble settled in the Borden Tract, married Mary Christian (as her 2nd husband) and was killed in the 2nd Kerr's Creek Massacre in 1764. This John Trimble acquired land in "North Mountain" in Augusta County, Virginia. This John Trimble is often referred to as "John Trimble of North Mountain" or "John Trimble of North Mountain and Brown's Settlement", and married Ann (Unknown).

Importation/Headrights to Orange County, VA

"Headrights" were grants of 50 acres of land per "head" - or per white male over the age of 16 who transported himself to the colonies. They appeared in the Court of Common Pleas in Orange County, Virginia. These headrights functioned as the only real immigration record for English, Scot or Irish immigrants during that time period. The headright identifies the country of origin and generally the port of entry in the colonies. The following persons appeared in Orange County, Virginia Court:
  • John Trimble and his children, Ann, Margaret and Mary.

Information on John Trimble

From "Annals of Augusta County, Virginia", pg. 180:

The large and respectable Trimble family of North Mountain, Augusta county, of which the late James B. Trimble was a prominent member, are not related, as far as known, to the family of James and John. The John Trimble mentioned as living in the North Mountain neighborhood in 1755, and also in 1775, was probably the ancestor of the James B. Trimble family.

Judge Robert Trimble and his brother, Judge John Trimble, were distinguished citizens of Kentucky. The former was a member of the Supreme Court of the United States when he died, in 1828. A sketch of him in Peters' Reports, Volume II, says that he was born in Augusta county in 1777 ; but all the Kentucky authorities state that he was a native of Berkeley county, Virginia. He was probably a grandson of one of the three emigrant brothers who did not come to Augusta.
