  4. 4.0 4.1 Letter, Maurine Creagh, Australia, to Robert Bruce Horsfall III, 14 Nov. 1987.

"Michael, a strange quaint reserved boy, went to Australia and had a not unsuccessful experience at the diggings. He then went to Queensland, and was unheard of for 17 years when he suddenly turned up in Melbourne in 1884. . . ."
(Source: W. J. Garnett, music critic of "The Age" in Melbourne, Australia, 1911).
[NOTE: 1884-17=1867, implied date of immigration. However, it must have been in the late 1850s, as Michael married in Australia in 1862.]

"Michael, . . . suddenly turned up in Melbourne, at his niece's Mrs. Syme, in 1884 but after a week or so went back to Qld & has never reported himself since." (W. J. Garnett, music critic of "The Age" in Melbourne, Australia, 1911). This was the year his nephew Captain Alfred Horsfall and wife visited Melbourne.

Michael must have kept in touch with the family to some degree, as we know that he visited the 'Symes' in Melbourne when Fred HORSFALL visited from England and there is a record of the family in the "pedigree" although inaccurate.

In 1883 Michael, listed as a Miner in Brisbane, gave evidence to the Government re “Operation of the traffic departments of the railways of the colony” “1883/v.40 1729-1730, held at the State Library.

    Death of Mr. M. E. R. Horsfall
A very sad occurrence took place on Tuesday at Sandgate (writes our corespondent). Mr. Michael E. R. Horsfall, who has been staying in Sandgate for some days, went down about 10 a.m. for a bath in the men's bathing-place at the end of Park-parade. After he came out of the water he was seen to fall as if in a fit. Dr. Guilford Davidson and the police were at once communicated with, and were soon in attendance. The doctor ordered Mr. Hofsfall's removal on an ambulance litter to the house where he was staying. Sergeant King and Constable Tracey had started to carry him thither, but before they were gone very far the sufferer breathed his last. The friends of the family were sent for, and the two sons arrived in Sandgate about 3 p.m. Arrangements were at once made to bring the body to town, which was done about 7 p.m. the same evening. The doctor gave the cause of death as syncope. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from Mr. J. G. Horfall's residence, Woolcowin.

It is obvious by the birthplaces of the children that Michael followed the Gold Diggings for many years as well as a few attempts at farming, finally returning to Brisbane where he had accumulated several properties.
