    Alfred “Fred” HORSFALL

    Alfred was a ships Captain and Commodore of the Moss Shipping Line, later called the British Steamship Company. He earned his Certificate of Competency No.7626 in 1853.
    He was mate on ORESTES 1853, mate on the ORONTES 1853-4, Captain on TAMAULIPAS 1854-5, ALEXANDRIA 1855, AREXES 1856-60, ATLANTIC 1860-2, ISIS 1862-5, THEBES 1865-6, NILE 1866 (lost May 25th 1866), MEMPHIS 1867-8.
    As a Captain with the Moss Shipping Line, when the ship was not fully laden, the Captain was allowed to “Fill up” with cargo of his own and this was how Alfred made a lot of his money.

    When Alfred’s wife Rebecca died around 1874, his daughter Mary took over the role of looking after the family while Alfred was away.

    In 1913 Alfred moved to "Hollenden" Exmouth, Devon and by 1916 several members of the family lived there: Alfred, his daughters Mary and Mabel; his granddaughter Elwy and Alfred’s young brother Jeremiah
    Alfred HORSFALL d.3rd March 1917 aged 88 at "Hollenden" Exmouth, Devon. His estate was valued at £97139 16s 9d which he left to his children but Henry the youngest, could not be found

    Alfred spent his life at sea, rising to be Commodore of the Moss Line of steamers, from which he retired. On retirement he lived at Moffat near Dumfries with his younger brother Jeremiah.
    [Moffat is north-northeast of Dumfries, in Dumfries and Galloway, SCOTLAND; Dalbeattie is south-southwest of Dumfries]
    Son Alfred Horsfall married a Garnett cousin from Waddow Hall, became a sea captain also. He and his wife visited Melbourne, Australia in 1884 on the clipper "Oakworth".
