  3.   William Miles HORSFALL b.? 1871 - d.? 1964 aged 93,, on the ? at ? he married 1. Elwy ROBERTS b.? - d.? 1932
William HORSFALL is the ninth child of Alfred HORSFALL and Rebecca HORSFALL nee POSTLEWAITE.
£10,000 was my fathers share of Grandfathers estate. My father's share was left between Aunt Caroline (Garnett of Clitheroe) & Aunt Maggie (Margaret Radcliffe of Knowsley L'pool & Guildford) “to see that Willie didn't starve” (and so that he would not blow the money). He lived on this I0,000 pounds in complete luxury & never gave one penny to -my mother - about 1930 she took him to court in L’pool & in order that she got nothing he went bankrupt & retired-from being an electrical engineer with Osman's (now G.E.C. - General Electric Co) so she got one cheque. for 32 pounds off his last pay & that is all we ever had from. him! He was a complete Washout - left us in Blundell Sands L'pool when I was 2 & when I was 4 my mother received a packet of letters from Nell (who was his housekeeper /servant) to him saying she was pregnant - he was asking for a divorce but in those days that was considered a terrible thing & my mother refused - so their daughter was born an illegitimate & in my presence was always alluded to as “Nell’s Niece" mother told me the truth. My father was educated at Spondon House School (Prep) & Repton.

    Mary Elwy Miles (Elwy) HORSFALL b.? 1902 - d. 20th September 1994 aged 91.
Elwy HORSFALL is the second child of William HORSFALL and Elwy HORSFALL nee ROBERTS.
Elwy was a Teacher in Rhodesia. Unfortunately her aunt threw out all of the letters that Elwy sent home telling of her life there
On returning from Rhodesia she made her home at "Hollenden" with her Grandparents and uncle Jeremiah from 1916.
She later lived at Chipping Camden, Gloustershire,
    She never married
Uncle Fred Radcliffe was Aunt Maggie’s husband. 1 lived with them for 18 months after an operation in Liverpool for a squint when I was 4 - he had 4 grown-up daughters & a son then at school, but who was killed in the 1914-18 war-
Every Sunday if I had cried during the week I was taken to his study before midday dinner, my knickers pulled down & I was whacked with his slipper & rice pudding for dinner- if I had NOT cried I was given a sixpence to put in my money box & got red jelly for dinner. After 18 months I was sent to boarding school in Wales & my money box was opened - it contained two shillings & sixpence farthing so evidently there were only 5 Sundays in 18 months when I didn't got the slipper!! Today’s (1990) children have no inkling of how Edwardian children were brought up.
My Father was a complete Washout - left us in Blundell Sands L'pool when I was 2 & when I was 4 my mother received a packet of letters from Nell (who was his housekeeper /servant) to him saying she was pregnant - he was asking for a divorce but in those days that was considered a terrible thing & my mother refused - so their daughter was born an illegitimate & in my presence was always alluded to as “Nell’s Niece" mother told me the truth.
I had been sent to a private school in Aberystwyth (Wales) at the age of 7 & g'father paid the fees through Aunt Maggie Radcliffe - Mothers cousin (Governor of Aberystwyth University) paying for my sister Biddy. We had to spend all our holidays at the school as no relatives evidently wanted to be burdened with us! But in July 1916 when I was 13, I was to change schools to Queen Ann's Caversham, Reading & went to live with Aunt Mary in Exmouth - which was my home until she died Sept 1948 - Aunt Mabel lived there too & g'father & gt'uncle -Jerry - the latter was a perfect dear.
When I was 20-21 I was living with Aunt Mary in Devon. I was at the Great Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924 - in my first teaching post in Lincoln & 8 of us on the staff had to take 80 children to Wembley to see the Exhibition - 10 children to each teacher. Most had never been in a train before, nor even out of Lincoln - it was a wonderful sight.
I went to Rhodesia in 1928 to teach & stayed 21 years –
In 1937 I was home on leave and Aunt Mary bought me a car to use for the 4 months that I was in England. I was to visit Aunt Carrie (Caroline) GARNETT in Clitheroe & to pick up Aunt Mabel at Leamington & take her with me. Each day we were at Shireburn I had to take the Aunts out in the car.
The only photograph that I had of Jeremiah Garnett HORSFALL I gave to Robin GARNETT
    Christmas 1990
I sold my cottage at Weston-sub-Edge in 1981 and moved into a 1 bedroom flat.
My fingers have become so riddled with arthritis that I find it hard to hold a pen for more than a few minutes.
