Facts and Events
[edit] About Bob GarciaRoberto "Bob" Garcia was born 28 October 1935 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California, son of Jose Cruz Garcia (b. abt. 1894) and his wife Pascuala Orasco (b. abt. 1901), both of mexican descent. Bob was listed in the 1940 United States Census in Stockton, California as "Bobby Garcia", age 4, with his family. As a young man, Bob enlisted and served in the United States Marines. After his basic training at the Marine Base in Quantico, Virginia, Bob was stationed in Korea for the remainder of his four-year stint. His service ended in 1956. Bob would always be particularly proud of his service in the Marines throughout his life. Shortly thereafter in 1956, Bob then began his career in the food industry as a route driver/salesman for Grand Taste Packing, a lunchmeat processor located in Southern California, before joining Alex Foods in 1962 as a Account Representative. He also gained additional sales experience with Carl Buddig & Co. for a few years before deciding to jump over to the broker side of the food industry. In 1972, he co-founded Galaxy Food Brokers with fellow food industry veteran Creighton Wiggins. Galaxy would grow into one of the premier perishables brokerage companies with more than 20 principals with products that were sold at supermarkets throughout the Southern California market, with sales of over $300 million annually. Bob became Galaxy's "good-will ambassador" at food industry functions and also met regularly with retail Buyers to get them to authorize additional products or to purchase spots in their weekly advertisements to sell more product to the consumers in their stores. He became known as a true professional to those Buyers for his attention to detail in product presentations and for his impeccible follow-through. Galaxy was eventually sold to Bradshaw, Inc. in 1990, and became its perishables division. (Bradshaw has since merged into Crossmark Sales & Marketing, Inc.). Early in Bob's career, in 1962, he became a member in a local food industry trade association, [then called] the Deli Council of Southern California, which later was re-named to the "Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council of Southern California" (or "DDBC"). Bob was recognized for his early contributions to the Council by being awarded the "Big Cheese" in July 1972, when he was still working for Carl Buddig & Company. He also ran and was elected to the Council's Board of Directors in the mid-1970's and served at its President in 1979. Bob Garcia continued his participation and support of the Deli Council for several years, and for that support was again recognized and selected as the Council's "Supplier of the Year" in 1983. According to a quote from the Deli Council's Executive Director Alfred A. "Bud" Moorman (1928-2014), "Bob was one of the key individuals who helped grow the Deli Council into an organization as he helped guide it into the position it is in today because of his foresight and long-range planning".Bob Garcia retired from the food industry in the 1990's and moved back to his home of Stockton, California, where he passed away on May 2, 2000. Bob was known as a "true professional" in the industry with an impeccible work ethic, as one of the truly nice people in the business, and had the respect of everyone that he came in touch with. He was survived by his wife Diana, and sons Bob Jr. and Patrick, who followed his father into the food business for many years, also working in the food brokerage business and serving on the DDBC Board of Directors for several years before also moving to Stockton, California, where many of the Garcia family still call home.
