Per recent message, you made changes to this person: <child title="Isaac Shields (1)" given="Isaac" surname="Shields" birthdate="15 Jul 1774" birthplace="County Cork, Republic of Ireland|Cork, Ireland" deathdate="21 Sep1861" deathplace="Lewisburg, Monroe, Preble, Ohio, United States|Lewisburg, Monroe, Preble, Ohio, United States "/>

There is no proof that Isaac Shields was born in County Cork, Republic of Ireland. One descendant wrote in a family Reunion presentation that the Shields family "left from County Cork" when they immigrated. Isaac's brother, Patrick, indicates in his biographical story, who was living when this story was written that he was born in Northern Ireland. County Cork is not in Northern Ireland. Likely Patrick and his older sibling, Isaac, and all other siblings were all born somewhere in Northern Ireland.--Grannyapple 00:09, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Your entry on Givenname:Ruth Ault [11 March 2008]

Hi, it looks like your entry on Givenname:Ruth Ault really belongs on a Person page for Ruth Ault. Could you create a person page for Ruth and move the information over there? The Givenname pages are just for recording alternate spellings and nicknames of given names. Thanks!--Dallan 23:39, 11 March 2008 (EDT)

Featured Page - week of August 2nd [3 August 2010]

Hello, just wanted to let you know that your article page, Gypsies in the Miami Valley of Ohio Research Guide has been selected as this week's WeRelate Featured Page. I have also done some slight "house cleaning" and formatting (added headers/bold type/etc.) to make it a little easier to read. Congratulations, and keep up the good work!

Fain Family [20 February 2011]

Hello, just wanted you to know that I've done some updating on the family of Nicholas Fain. I've corrected some information on the line of his son Capt. John Fain (you had actually added him twice with differing information about 20 years apart), and his family, and added some sources and documentation on his family that should help other researchers.

Best regards,

Jim:)--Delijim 12:35, 20 February 2011 (EST)

Thank You for Working on New Netherlands [26 July 2012]

I've asked you a couple of questions on talk pages there, but I want you to know how grateful I am that someone has a real source for the New Netherlands area of WeRelate and is doing something to improve it. Salute! --Pkeegstra 13:00, 11 July 2012 (EDT)

Orville and Wilbur Wright of Dayton, Ohio are descendants of this group. A number of the earliest white people in Dayton were from Monmouth County, New Jersey and include the Van Cleve family and the Conover family. slw--Sorghumgrass 14:35, 26 July 2012 (EDT)

Living people [27 July 2012]

I noticed that you have created pages for people who are still living (for example: this family). WeRelate's policy does not allow the creation of pages for living people due to privacy concerns. Please delete your Person and Family pages for living people by clicking on More>Delete from the menu on the left of each page. You can use templates such as Template:Pedigree4 to connect family lines using a chart on your User page. --Jennifer (JBS66) 19:46, 25 July 2012 (EDT)

I understand that we want to respect the privacy of the living. Go ahead and delete this. How does the policy address obituaries that mention people who are still alive? Should I have only the citation of the obituary or put XXX where the names of the living are or what? Thanks for your help. slw--Sorghumgrass 14:38, 26 July 2012 (EDT)

It does not appear that WR has a written policy about this yet. However, it has been past practice that obituaries and census transcriptions that mention living people are allowed since they have been published publicly. I will put a note on my to-do list to mention this to the admins so that we can write up a policy about this. --Jennifer (JBS66) 12:41, 27 July 2012 (EDT)

Anne Jacquot [8 September 2014]

What is the source for the marriage of Anne Jacquot to John Christopher Houchard? It seems unlikely that she could get married in 1813, to someone who was to die in 1847, emigrate to Ohio, and marry again in France in 1824 (the marriage certificate is cited on the page) then later die in Ohio. This must be a different Anne Jacquot. (ancestry.com public trees is not considered a source)--CTfrog 22:20, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Rumors only on an Ancestry tree. I agree that it is not a reputable citation. You may remove it if you like or detach it and have it be a separate entry.--Sorghumgrass 21:07, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Possible Duplicates? [26 April 2015]

Family:Thomas Shepherd and Nelly Schenck (1) and Family:Thomas Shepherd and Nelly Schenck (2) showed up on the Duplicate Families Report as possible duplicates. I've marked the first with a "do not merge" template, since there seem to be a lot of similar names in the source you have on both pages. If this is not correct, you can always remove the temple. It might be helpful, though, if you could add a little more information to some of the person pages involved, even a discussion of the difficulties of sorting the two families out, just as a help (and warning!) for other researchers. Thanks, --GayelKnott 21:47, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Benjamin Woodward and Mary Wright [17 August 2016]

Circumstantly, this 99.9% does not apply:

Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Warnings Out = 3:106 "Bridgewater: the widow Mary Woodward, alias Wright, represented...to be an inhabitant of Hanover...now resident at the dwelling house of Benjamin Gurney, to depart town, 7 June 1762.

After 49 years of marriage, nobody would refer to a women by their maiden name. Alias is used because there was a recent name change such as a woman who recently married.

Second, it says she is a resident of Hanover. Benjamin and Mary moved to Leicester in the late 1720s and would not be from Hanover. But in Hanover there is a couple Seth and Mary Woodward who are having children in the 1750s.

A widow of Mary (Wright) Woodward's age (if she was a widow, since there is no knowledge of when Benjamin died, and based on his birth he could have lived into the 1770s without being too remarkable) would almost certainly live in her husband's house or with a child. Most if not all of the children seem to be in Worcester county.

Simple name matching does not form the basis for good genealogy. --Jrich 17:51, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Bristol County, MA: Extracts from Court of General Sessions of the Peace, 1697-1801 (available at americanancestors.org, membership is required).
"To Either of the Constable of ... Dartmouth ... Whereas Mary Wright (alias) Woodworth with two Children of Bridgewater ... hath ... Removed ... Her self and Children into the Town of Dartmouth ... warn ... Depart ... Seventh day of December AD 1763 ... her two Children Joseph & Susanah Write to Depart..."
Besides the children having surname Wright, Benjamin and Mary had no children named Joseph or Susannah. This is not Benjamin's widow. --Jrich 20:55, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Linan vs Tinan [12 October 2017]

Hi, I've just been searching the Ashtabula Marriage records (original), and the name is definitely TINAN; there are several marriages in Vol. B for Tinan, none for Linan.--SkippyG 01:49, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

Tinan seems to be the name I find in every source EXCEPT Moina Large's book. She vaguely mentions 4 Linan brothers. I think I figured out the names of 3 of them, but not the 4th.--Sorghumgrass 13:54, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

Kind of on a whim and kind of inspired by the 50th anniversary of the lake at Roaming Shores (last year) I started researching Rome township history. I am working on a list of early settlers. I haven't defined exactly what I mean by early, but generally arriving between 1805 and 1825. Almost all of them are from Connecticut except for the one family from Maine (the Tinan brothers). East Haddam and Lyme, Connecticut are the places of origin of almost all of these settlers. Understandably, many also went to NEW Lyme, Ohio.--Sorghumgrass 13:58, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

Your Support query of 20 Apr 2018 [21 April 2018]

I had a look at your page for Martin Pierce. While you are waiting for DataAnalyst to come back with more suggestions, perhaps you would like to have a look at my recently created page for Joseph Redding. I have tried to reduce the space taken to report each census entry, and yet reproduce all the information it contained. Using commas between facts, for each census, each person's description only takes one line. The source information is also condensed. Admittedly, 19th century UK census entries were not so voluminous as US ones! But you might find that a little shifting around may make the information you want to convey stands out a bit more.

What I am trying to figure out is the purpose of references [3], [6], [8], [9] and [10]. None of them contain any facts about Marvin Pierce, but the citations themselves seem to be repeated two or three times. And where did he emigrate to or immigrate from?

The "Personal History" section can be used for a brief biography (or a long one, if you are so disposed), but can also pinpoint problems in completing the research on an individual.

Hopes this helps, --Goldenoldie 09:01, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Pages for Living Individuals Not Allowed [16 January 2020]

Hi

You might or might not be aware that WeRelate policy does not allow pages for living individuals (see FAQ:Can I create pages for living persons). I am in the process of ensuring that no pages with "Living" in the title remain, so that new users don't think they can create pages for living individuals. I note that you have several. If you would like some time to update them, please let me know, and I will handle other pages first and come back to yours later. If I don't hear from you, I will likely start to address your pages in a few weeks.

Note that I have been attempting to preserve as many pages as I can by doing some very limited online research to see if the person is in fact deceased. Given the number of pages titled Living, I cannot spend much time on each page, so the pages are more likely to be preserved if you can provide death information yourself.

Please reply here if you plan to update the pages yourself (even if you can't get to it for a few months), or if you have any questions or concerns. I will be watching this page. Respectfully,--DataAnalyst 21:07, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I note that you are still adding pages for people who may be living - such as Person:Maggie Woods (2) and her second husband. If these people are deceased, please enter death info. Otherwise, the pages have to be deleted, as WeRelate policy does not allow pages for anyone born in the last 110 years for which death info is not provided. Please refrain from creating additional pages for potentially living individuals, as it adds work to an already very large task for me. Thanks.--DataAnalyst 17:40, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

I am in the middle of researching Maggie Woods. I just spoke with someone who says she is deceased. I will work on her husband today as well.--Sorghumgrass 17:48, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

OK, thanks. I will remove the delete template.--DataAnalyst 20:10, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Hmmm [29 August 2019]

Your changes to Person:Joanna Burnham (1): here

Hmmm... the existing page showed she wrote her will in 1757 and had two marriages after 1740. And you posted a death date of 1740, overwritting what was there before, which was considerably different.

1) Genealogical good practice is to refute wrong information. In this case, this would involve explaining that the will belongs to someone else, and that the two marriages belong to someone else, in order that a death date in 1740 could be possible.

2) MacKenzie's book is not exactly an authoritative source, as it throws dates and names at the reader without explaining how they are known. So in any conflict against any primary, or even a decent secondary source, it will be deemed not authoritative, etc. Just because something is in print does not mean its information is reliable.

3) As is, and was, posted on her first husband's page, the death date of 30 Apr 1740 belongs to him, Daniel Dodge (Wenham VR, p. 190). Suspect the format of MacKenzie's format is confusing, but all the dates apply to Daniel, none given here are describing Joanna. Further he got her name wrong, an error that can be explained only if we know where he got his information, which we don't, so have to simply assume it is a typo or other kind of error on his part.

DANIEL DODGE, b. Wenham, Mass., 26th April, 1677; graduated at Harvard, 1700; m. 20th June, 1706, Joanna BENHAM[sic], d. 30th April, 1740.

I am backing out your change. --Jrich 00:24, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

Schneider Family [12 January 2021]

Hi Sorghumgrass,

Hope you're well. I was wondering how you're related to Maria Snyder (1859-1940) whose parents are Frederick and Katherine Schneider? Mary (Maria) Snyder is my great-great grandmother. I was wondering if you have any other information or where you found the information? We have been looking for over a couple years now and it has been quite challenging! lol Hope to hear back from you, any information would be helpful.

Take care,

Kara--Onion38 02:11, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Dear Kara: I am the genealogy librarian for the Dayton Metro Library. I see that this family has Dayton/Montgomery County ties. That is most likely the reason I was researching this family. When a question comes in I use WeRelate software to organize my findings, then I share the link with the inquirer. Is there any specific research question with which I can help you? You can reach me here or at history @ daytonmetrolibrary.org .--Sorghumgrass 14:42, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Andrew Stupjansky [9 June 2021]

Hi,

I'm trying to help a cousin out to get more information on Andrew J Stupjansky 1874-1963. I'm new to werelate.org, and I was wondering how to find out who posted the comments about him.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks Reta--Rpvomela 04:33, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

I posted the negative comments and stated that they were the OPINIONS of Frank Gambol's children. Mr. Stupjansky was Frank's stepfather. The FACTS speak for themselves and are stated with sources. The OPINIONS are opinions I personally have heard from more than one of Frank Gambol's (living) children. Obviously Frank bore ill will toward his stepfather and there was some reason that Mr. Stupjansky's children changed their surnames. I did not know Andrew Stupjansky or Mary Sedlak, but I did know Frank Gambol and do know his children.-- Shawna Gambol Woodard--Sorghumgrass 20:19, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Shawna,

Thank you - I sent you a message on Ancestry also, since I noticed you have a family tree on there. Reta--Rpvomela 04:47, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Pages for living people [6 January 2022]

Hi

You are probably aware that WeRelate doesn't allow pages for living people, which it defines as anyone born in the last 110 years without a death date. We are getting more rigorous about enforcing this policy and no longer accepting a death place or indicator. The pages below are all considered to be living, although I noted that one I fixed had the death date in an image, just not in the death date field. Since these all show up on a report I run, the death date needs to be in the death date field. Note that you can use "(in infancy)" or "(young)" for someone who died young but for whom you don't know the date (see Help:Conventions/Date).

Please enter death dates where you can. Pages without a death date will be deleted in about a month. Note: These are all pages where you were the last contributor. You don't need to feel responsible for pages created by others. If you need more time, please let me know. Thanks--DataAnalyst 23:33, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Pages without dates [13 January 2022]

Hi

In addition to requiring death dates for people born in the last 110 years, WeRelate no longer allows trees without dates, to ensure there are no pages for living people. The pages below are either isolated pages or in small trees without dates. Again, I note that some have information that establishes that they lived more than 110 years ago, but it is not in fields that can be reported on. Could you please go through these pages and enter birth and/or death dates or other facts as appropriate (e.g., Living in Nov 1838). It would save me time in my massive cleanup project. Thanks.

If you need more than a month, please let me know. Thanks--DataAnalyst 23:51, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

I'll work on this. Some of the Native American names I may never find dates for, but I can add ranges.--Sorghumgrass 00:56, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

I have made quite a bit of progress on this list and am down to first names letter "F". I need more than 9 more days, however, to complete this analysis, say, mid-February 2022? slw--Sorghumgrass 14:52, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

No problem. I'll make a note to hold off until at least the end of Feb.--DataAnalyst 15:00, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

OK. I have added dates wherever I could find information . Where I could not confirm birth or death dates I added ranges based on at least one fact. When I had no additional information I deleted place-holder names. The good news is I found where in England two of my husband's ancestors were born! Serendipity for the win!--Sorghumgrass 14:57, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

Wayl-way-way-se-ka [30 November 2022]

Niyawe for you efforts

I was researching the other day and came across your work you've posted to Tecumseh's family tree. I have added some missing elements around Thomas Washington but am grateful for your efforts. I am still clarifying some details but wanted to say thank you and reach out.--Tecumseh72 02:59, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

You are welcome. I work in the genealogy and local history section of the Dayton Metro Library. When I moved to this part of the state I encountered a number of references to Shawnee and Miami history and started thinking "where DID their descendants go"? The national and state government of Ohio does not currently recognize any tribal communities or nations within Ohio. I started reading up on this and encountered very little on traditional genealogy websites or in books. Instead I found information in old newspapers, old issues of Ohio Archaeological and Historical Quarterly, and full text books that are copyright free online (google books, internet archive, and hathitrust). I hope that you will forgive that I gave people last names like "Shawnee" because I did not know how else to use the software to indicate that the naming practices do not follow the European patronymic rules.--Sorghumgrass 15:00, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

I too have found connecting the dots very difficult. Most of my knowledge is past down verbally, but when gaps appear it not an easy road to sort out. For example there are at least 3 different alphabets used in Shawnee along with whom ever dictated their best English form of what they heard. For example there are two portraits of Thomas Washington at the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio (i.e. Oil canvas 912-0-513. Lo-waine-wage-she-kah), however from tribal documents you see Wayl-way-way-se-ka, which really makes a quick association difficult. Another is his wife Nar-wal-le-pe-SE. There is no 'r' sound in the shawnee language, so I know this name is not correct, but as of yet I have not found anything written to see what it should be. Her English name was Solo Washington, and my mom lived with her as a child.

I've spent most efforts around Nannie Washington, daughter of Thomas Washington, whom I added to the list of children. She died young and my grandma was 5 and raised by her aunt, so a lot of records drop drop both from Thomas Washington's lineage and I am trying to preserve this. Even with what I have found, there is still a dead end as to who my grandmothers father was. His roll was not AST but Eastern Shawnee and the records are not readily accessible to me. As I type though, I may just reach out to them and see where it goes.

Thanks again for your time,

Hinikogi, niyawe!--Tecumseh72 17:00, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
