Facts and Events
Erastus Perry Varner, age 84
Erastus Perry Varner was the son of Alexander Varner and Eunice Johnson of North Carolina. Erastus was born in North Carolina, probably in Randolph or Davidson County, on 16 June 1846. Erastus married Arbelia Fox on 7 October 1867 in Shelby County, Indiana not long after the Civil War. The marriage did not last, and he stated in pension records that they "never kept house together." Erastus later married Margaret Ann Loudermilk on 12 September 1872 in Clay County, Indiana.[14] Erastus had at least ten children with Margaret, four of which died as children.
Description
Erastus was 5 feet, 5-1/2 inches tall, and had dark gray eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion.[4][13]
Occupation
In 1870, at the time of the federal census, Erastus was living in Cass County, Missouri. He was working as a farm laborer, and living in the home of J.D. Hines, the county attorney. In 1880, he is listed as a farmer. For the 1900 and 1910 federal census (at the age of 54 and 64), he is listed as a coal miner. The area around Ashboro, Indiana was surrounded by coal mines.
Military Service
Erastus was a Union private in Company I of the 16th Indiana Volunteers (mounted infantry)[13], and later transferred as a private to Company B, 13th Indiana Cavalry.[15] Erastus served with his older brother Jacob, who was already a veteran of the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and the 1st Engineer Battalion in the regular army.
